Blog 12.1.24

This week we began our ‘Tell us a tale’ theme.  This term we will be reading lots of books by Julia Donaldson.  We started by reading ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’.  The alien Smeds (who are red) never mix with the alien Smoos (who are blue). So when a young Smed and Smoo fall in love, their families strongly disapprove. Their families search lots of different planets but are unable to locate them.  Peace is finally restored and love conquers all. There's even a gorgeous purple baby to celebrate!

Our Rainbow Challenges this week have been related to this story:

Writing – Nursery: Write about a Smoo or a Smed and tell an adult what your writing says. Reception: Write a description of a Smoo and a Smed and use the sounds that you know in your writing.

Maths – Nursery: Count the space pictures and tell an adult how many there are. Reception: Count the space pictures and write the number.

Funky Fingers – Nursery: Follow the lines in the maze. Reception: Follow the lines in the maze before the timer runs out.

Creative – Nursery: Paint a red Smed and blue Smoo and then paint a purple Smoosmed baby.  Reception: Paint a red Smed and blue Smoo and then paint a purple Smoosmed baby and talk about how you made purple.

Construction– Nursery: Create a rocket using blocks. Reception: Design and create a rocket using blocks

Drawing – Follow the instructions to draw a rocket

Outside – Nursery: Use chalk to draw a Smed and a Smoo on the playground.  Reception: Use chalk to draw and label a Smed and a Smoo on the playground.

What a great week for Rainbow Challenges!  The children have been really focused and nearly all the Reception children and some of the Nursery children completed all their challenges.  Lots of Gold Challenges completed- Well done!

In maths this week the Reception children have subitising and representing amounts to five and recapping how those numbers can be made. The Nursery children have been comparing the numbers 1,2 and 3.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been recapping sounds that we learnt last term.  The nursery children have been investigating sounds that we can hear outside and sounds linked to firefighters and listening to the sounds at beginning of words.

In music we have started a new theme ‘Action Songs’. This week we listened and sang the song ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’.  We then learnt some sign language and used the signs to sing ‘Are you sleeping?’.  We have also been learning about the planets this week with Mrs Threlfall.  We found out some information about how they are different and the Reception children wrote a fact about a planet.  Some of us also made rockets using recycled materials just like the ones the Smeds and the Smoos had.  We also made some ‘Missing’ posters for Bill and Janet in the story using our phonic knowledge to write a description of what they looked like.

This week we finished our RE theme ‘Why do Christians perform a nativity play at Christmas?’ We looked at our nativity display that we had been making before the Christmas holidays to see what was missing.  We recapped the nativity story and realised that our picture needed the wise men.  We discussed what part they played in the story and what gifts they gave baby Jesus.  We then made the wise men to complete our display.

Next week we are continuing with the story 'The Smeds and the Smoos' by Julia Donaldson.
