Our theme this half term is ‘Are we there yet?’.  For the next two weeks our book will be ‘I Like Trains’ by Daisy Hirst.  The story is about Small Dog. He likes playing with his train and putting all his toy animals on board so they can go off on a journey. Small Dog loves trains. Playing with them, reading about them, drawing them and pretending to be the driver. But the best thing of all is going on a real train – looking at everything whoosh past the window!

Our Rainbow challenges this week have been related to this book:

Writing – Nursery: Draw a journey that you have been on Reception: Draw and label a journey that you have been on

Maths – Nursery: Move the hands on the clocks to make the o’clock train departure times Reception: Move the hands on the clocks to make the o’clock and the half past train departure times

Funky Fingers – Nursery: Place the buttons on the train Reception: Use the tweezers to place the buttons on the train

Creative – Nursery: Use recycled materials to make a train Reception: Use recycled materials to make a train and make a list of what you have used

Playdough– Nursery: Make a playdough train Reception: Make a playdough train with four carriages

Drawing – Follow the instructions to draw a steam train

In maths this week the Reception children have been learning about teen numbers.  The Nursery children have been learning about sequencing

This week in Read, Write Inc. the Reception children have been learning sounds ea, oi and a-e.  Some of the Nursery children have been learning the sounds m, a, s, d  and the other Nursery children and continued to focus on listening games.

On Wednesday we played lots of games with Sam from Newcastle United Foundation.  We have been working on our listening skills and following instructions while playing games.

Our music theme this half term is ‘Transport’.  This week we explored the different sounds that different types of transport make.  We used our voices to make the sounds.

Our RE theme this half term is ‘Special Stories’.  This week we spoke about what our favourite stories are.  We listened to the Islamic story of Seven Kittens.  We learnt that this story is about caring and respecting living things.

This week we have also looked at photos of some of us on train journeys, decorated our own train carriages and talked about who is in the carriages with us.  We used positional language to put a bear in, out, under, over, up, down, in front, behind a box railway carriage. In the story Small Bear makes a ‘chuff’ ‘chuff’ sound for his train, we thought of lots of words that rhymed with ‘chuff’ and the Reception children wrote a list of words.

Next week we will continue with our story ‘I Like Trains’ by Daisy Hirst
