Starfish

We started beach school today with our annual children’s cancer run.  We did lots of running on our way down to the beach.  There were some parents at the golf club to cheer and wave for us when we arrived.  We all enjoyed an ice pop at the end which was very welcome as we were quite warm from all the running!

Our beach school book was ‘Tip tap went the crab’ by Tim Hopgood.  In the story a curious little crab tip-taps out of her rock pool to explore the big blue sea, she discovers a world full of wonderful creatures from 1 seagull to 10 tiny crabs at the end of the story.

We wrote about how the crab went ‘tip tap’ and wrote and drew some of the animals that the little crab saw on her travels.

After our writing we had some toys crabs to play with in the sand to recreate the story.  We then went on a walk along the beach to see if we could find any crabs.  We found a body, some legs and claws.  We told Orcas that we were looking for crabs and they found a tiny whole crab for us to look at.  After looking at the crabs we looked at some photographs of lots of different kinds of crabs.  We spoke about how they were the same and different.

We did some counting and number recognition from the story and played a game of crab tag before we went for lunch.
