What a fantastic couple of days we have had! We were all so, so glad to be back in school. It was great to see our friends again. We also welcomed some new children into Starfish class.
We have spent this week getting used to a new way of playing and learning in class. We are so lucky to have so many fantastic toys and resources in our class but at the moment we don’t have all of our toys out. Some are for Monday, some are for Tuesday, some are for Wednesday and some are for Thursday. We don’t have any for Friday because that is when we are at the beach! We are also spending even more time outside. Mrs Cotton has sorted us all out with our own sets of wellies, waterproof trousers and coats. We are trying really hard them to put on and off on our own.
We have been practising our speaking and listening skills by finding out about each other, what we have been doing and what we like to do. There has been lots of counting going on in all the areas of the classroom. Counting bricks when building, counting children lining up, counting beads on string, counting Numicon, counting spoons and cups of water outside and counting so much more! Lots of children have been mark making on white boards, with chalk outside and with different pens and paper. This was great to see and . In the Tuff Tray this week we have been using tweezers to pick up pom poms (this is really good to help us get strong muscles in our finger so we can do brilliant writing!) and have been collecting treasure in pots.
We have been mixing our own paint using powder paint and have had great fun washing up the pots and brushes afterwards! Our theme this half term is ‘All About Me’ so our role play area is a home corner. We have been making Mrs Popay and Mrs Cotton lots of cups of tea and coffee!
We have all loved being outside and playing in the Embletub, our new addition to the outside area which was kindly donated to us during lockdown (a very special thank you to Mr Cotton and some of the parents for collecting and delivering it and a special thank you to Mr Popay for making sure it is safe for us to play in). We have been fishing in it, carrying cargo of tyres and wood and using it as a lifeboat. We can’t wait for lots more adventures! We have explored the water area and the mud kitchen and have had so much fun playing together again. On Friday we investigated some maize starch packaging that had been in one of the deliveries. We put it in water and were amazed at how it dissolved in the water. We had lots of fun loading it into the trucks and playing with the dinosaurs until it all disappeared. Fortunately there is still some left so we can continue next week.
Next week we will be starting our daily phonics and maths sessions and the Reception children will be bringing home reading books. Our book of the week will be ‘While We Can’t Hug’ by Eoin McLaughlin and Polly Dunbar. It is about two friends who aren’t allowed to hug but find lots of other ways to show that they love each other.
