Our book this week was ‘Little Robin Red Vest’ by Jan Fernley.  The story is set on  frosty evening, a week before Christmas, Little Robin washes and irons seven warm vests for the chilly nights to come. As the days go by, he comes across lots of cold and shivering animals, and kindly offers them his vests to wear. But on Christmas Eve, Little Robin is cold and all alone with no vests left! That is, until Father Christmas arrives to reward his kindness and generosity with a perfect little red vest . . which is just how a robin got his red breast!

We have had robin related Rainbow Challenges this week!  Our challenges have been to:

  • Make a playdough robin
  • Cut out a vest and decorate with a bingo dabber
  • Make a robin from a paper plate
  • Make a pinecone bird feeder
  • Practise writing the days of the week
  • Use different paper vests to make a repeating pattern

This week we learnt a poem called ‘Christmas’.  It was another eight lined poem which Starfish learnt brilliantly.

The Reception children learnt the last few sounds in Read, Write, Inc. set 1,  x, ng and nk. We also wrote words that have those sounds in.   The nursery children have been thinking about the sounds at beginning of words and have been looking at the shapes their mouths make when saying those sounds.

In maths the Reception children have been finding out and exploring more, less and using the word fewer.   Nursery children have been making patterns and using the words first, next and then.

We have been doing some Christmas themed activities this week including decorating trees, retelling the Christmas story, racing Santa’s and reindeer, printing snowflakes and reading Christmas stories.  We have also been joining with Puffin class singing Christmas carols.

Next week our book will be ‘Oh Christmas Tree’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.
