Our book this week was ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper.  It is about Cat, Duck and Squirrel live in an old white cabin, with a pumpkin patch in the garden. Every day Cat slices up some pumpkin, Squirrel stirs in some water and Duck tips in some salt to make perfect pumpkin soup, until the day Duck wants to do the stirring...

This week our Rainbow Challenges have all been to do with the story and pumpkins!

Writing – Draw and label a story map to show where Squirrel and Cat went to look for Duck

Maths – Count the pumpkins and match the number and Numicon

Funky Fingers – Use a hole punch to make holes in a cardboard pumpkin and thread wool in the holes

Creative – Make orange paint to paint a pumpkin

Construction area – Build a tower to support a pumpkin

Outside – Putt a golf ball through a pumpkin

Nearly all the children completed the challenges again this week and six children did their Gold Challenges.  Well done!

This week the nursery children have been using instruments to make sound effects to different stories.  Our favourite story was ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’. In the Curiosity Box this week we had some small, different coloured pumpkins.  There was a lot of things to talk about! Why were they different colours? What were they like inside?  Where did they come from?  Would they turn orange?  Were they really pumpkins?

We had lots of Pumpkin activities this week.  We enjoyed playing in our role play Pumpkin Patch and it has continued to be very popular!  We painted some big pumpkins with blackboard paint and then used chalk to decorate them.   We then cut open the pumpkin and were amazed at all the seeds inside.  We tried to get them out with tweezers but they were very slippery! We wanted to make pumpkin soup just like the story but decided that as we had all had our hands inside; it wouldn’t be very good to eat!  Instead Mrs Cotton gave us some orange coloured water and we mixed, stirred, whisked and poured our ‘soup’.  This week we even made pumpkin spice playdough!  It smelt lovely!

After half term we  will be learning about Diwali and Bonfire Night.
