Happy New Year to you all.
Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. It was great to see so many happy faces on Tuesday morning (and that was just the parents!) The children were so excited to see each other and tell them all about their Christmas presents.
I just want to say a big thank you for the gifts I received for Christmas from some of you. It was very kind of you all.
We started thinking about our new topic of Africa this week. We wrote down all our ideas about what we think it is like there, what animals we might find there as well as where in the world we think it is.
In Maths, we started looking at money. We began to make amounts using different coins as well as placing them in order. We also had a few promotions for some people in Big Maths too – what a way to start the New Year. Well done goes to MARLIE, POLLY, FLO, FLORENCE and ELLA! Super job!
Keeping safe is an important thing to think about, so in Puffin class this week we began to think about road safety. We are going to look at it more next week but this week we came up with some good rules on how to cross the road safely.
In RE we have started a new topic 'Who is Muslim and what do they believe?' This week we thought about people who are important in our lives and drew them inside a heart. We looked at a balloon and spoke about the fact that we know there is air inside even though we can't see it. We then made a list of other things we know are there but we can't see. We thought of germs, wind, electricity, love, magnetic force. We learnt that Muslims believe that the world would not function without God just as a balloon would not function without air. We found out that that the Muslim word for God is Allah. We discussed where we thought people might find God. We then produced some artwork showing our ideas. We drew places not a person – because Muslims never draw Allah. They say pictures of Allah are wrong and Allah is too great for pictures. This is what we said about our artwork:
'I’m drawing heaven and earth because God is everywhere.'
' I’m painting the sky because God lives in heaven. I think his house is in the clouds. '
'I’m drawing a scary forest with a glow in the distance. The glow is God keeping people safe.'
'I’m drawing the world and space and a question mark to show ‘Where is God?’
God is so important to Muslims that the first words that are whispered into the ear of a baby when they are first born are the words ‘God is most great. There is no god but Allah,’. We thought about what we would whisper in a baby's ear. These are some of our ideas:
'You will be safe with us.'
'We will never stop loving you.'
'We will always keep with you.'
'You are the best thing in the galaxy.'
Hope you all have a good weekend.
